C2C REU Application

We are excited about your interest in our REU program!

Applications for 2025 will open on December 18th!

Before you begin your application please review the instructions carefully. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Successful applicants are expected to participate in all aspects of the REU, including our REU Kick Off Workshop held during the first week of the summer REU and professional development seminars held throughout the the length of the REU.  Participants may lose eligibility for a stipend if they do not participate fully in all required REU activities, regardless of whether they are in-person or virtual.
  • Prior to submitting an application, prospective REU participants may contact faculty mentors if they have specific questions about the projects.
  • You may indicate specific projects that you are interested in joining.  Follow the “Projects and Mentors” link in the navigation bar to see details for currently available projects.  While we will take your preferences into consideration, we cannot promise to match you only to those projects you indicate.
  • Carefully complete all of the information in the NSF ETAP application system and review your application before submitting it.  We strongly recommend that you prepare your answers in a word processing software and then copy and paste so that you can easily save and review your responses prior to submitting them.  Please contact us if you would prefer to complete this application in a form that can be printed and returned by regular mail.
  • How will my application be reviewed?  A team of faculty, including REU mentors, participate in carefully reviewing every application we receive. We take a qualitative, holistic approach to reviewing applications that considers the fact that students at different universities have different access to research and other opportunities.  In addition to what you write in your application we therefore also carefully consider your letters from references to help explain the context of your university and why you are a candidate who would especially benefit from participating in the C2C REU program. We also understand that students do not all have the same opportunity to get to know a faculty member, particularly in a research setting, and take this into account in our review.  There are 6 primary criteria that will be used to review your application and each one is equally important:
    1. Interest and commitment to research related to coastal issues (i.e., why our REU?)
    2. Past life and/or research experiences that will support your success
    3. Accessibility of undergraduate research at your home institution
    4. Potential contributions to a research team and diversity of experience in the program
    5. Academic background (including specific skills, courses, relevance to research and GPA)
    6. Any other unique factors that stand out in your application
